Following the death of Rev. Dr. J. Robert Nelson on July 6, 2004, the family and friends of Dr. Nelson suggested that memorial be given to establish an endowed lectureship named the Nelson Lectures on Interfaith and Ecumenical Solutions for Peace. Dr. Nelson, renowned United Methodist ecumenist and theologian, became executive director of the Institute of Religion in the Texas Medical Center in 1985. It was soon after his move to Houston, that Bob became a member of the Texas Annual Conference, and his wife, Dr. Patricia Mercer Nelson, became a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Dr. Pat Nelson continues to worship at St. Paul’s and participates in the plans to honor Dr. Bob Nelson’s legacy of peace solutions with this lectureship.
